And yet Credit Suisse failed to stop him. There were red flags along the way, including verbal warnings and written cautions by supervisors in 2008, 2011 and twice in 2013 for breaching compliance policies. He cut out the signature from a document, pasted it on trade orders and photocopied them, according to Lescaudron’s own admission. Outside its headquarters on the stately Paradeplatz, someone scrawled: “The next bank to go bye bye?” That question was later replaced by expressions of anger and disgust as reality gradually set in. Although the mood was sombre, managers organised town hall meetings to quell employee fears and investment advisers fielded calls from clients to discuss liquidity concerns, according to people with knowledge of the discussions.īut in its hometown of Zurich, doubts and frustration were growing. While concerns about further contagion are sure to persist, the sale to UBS avoids a disorderly collapse.īefore the global financial crisis – which Credit Suisse survived without a bailout, unlike many of its peers - the Swiss lender had more than $US1 trillion in assets, but after years of decay, they’ve dwindled to about $US580 billion, roughly half of UBS’s.įor Switzerland, the blow could be significant. ‘Unfortunately, the loss of confidence from the markets and customers was no longer able to be halted.’ Swiss Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutterĭesignated as one of the world’s 30 systemically important banks, Credit Suisse is the biggest casualty of the financial turmoil triggered by central banks as they tighten monetary policy to rein in inflation. “Unfortunately, the loss of confidence from the markets and customers was no longer able to be halted.” The Swiss government “regrets that CS wasn’t able to master its own difficulties – that would have been the best solution,” Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter said at a press conference in Bern on Sunday. With the country’s banking sector at risk, Swiss authorities stepped in to push UBS to become a reluctant white knight. This is the simple past form of the irregular verb swim. “Our team actually won the most distance swum and the most funds raised. I'm so proud of him, he called me at 5.30 this morning. If this is a typographical error or because the British or Australian native speaker is blissfully unaware of making any grammatical errors that is open to debate. In fact, some British newspapers omit the auxiliary when reporting direct speech. However, in fast speech, it's easy to mistake the “ he's swum” for “ he swum” because the 's sound merges seamlessly with the first letter in swum, so we end up with a single /s/ sound. In normal speech, the auxiliary have is commonly contracted, so the he has becomes he's. The following is an example of the past participle used in the present perfect, it is grammatically correct and is more common in the British English idiolect than in American English. ![]() However, I am not a big fan of too much processing. I will most definitely spend more time with it. This is a professional software tool that allows you to refine your RAW or jpeg images. It’s much more than just Instagram on Steroids. The software goes way beyond the typical set of filters some apps provide. It could be a very powerful tool for enhancing your portraits and street photographs.Īnalog Efex Pro is a great tool to give your photos an aged looked. The samples below took me just a few minutes each. While I do have to admit that I am not a big fan of too much post-processing, I really enjoyed working with the software. I spent a few minutes this weekend playing with Analog Efex Pro. This plug-in allows you to fine-tune every little pixel to develop professional-grade images. It would be easy to dismiss Analog Efex Pro to be just another photographic filter software. You can pretty tweak each everything very quickly. Compare that to applying Gaussian Blur in Photoshop. It is quite easy to use yet it is extremely powerful. The screenshot above shows the motion & zoom blur feature. Here are some examples of the included tools: Best of all – it does not take very long to learn. Once you start digging in, you will be amazed about the powerful options Analog Efex Pro provides. I would anticipate most people using a mixture of both approaches (that’s what I do). If you are more experienced you use the library of impressive tools such as lens distortion, bokeh, lens scratches, wet plate effects and film frames. You can use Analog Efex Pro in three different ways: The easiest and fastest option is to apply one of the many pre-configured presets. The interface is nicely structured with presets on the left and a panel for detailed adjustments on the right. Just like the other NIK Collection plug-ins, you can easily launch Analog Efex Pro from Lightroom. Even better – Google just released a new tool and it’s called Analog Efex Pro and it aims to give your photographs the look and feel of traditional film cameras and dark room techniques. It is now priced at USD 149 for all seven plug-ins. Also, they drastically lowered the price for the entire collection. On the contrary, Google keeps enhancing the package and they just released a completely new plug-in. Some people thought that this would be the end of NIK. In a somewhat stunning move, Google acquired NIK in early 2013. You can easily learn how to improve your photos in just a few minutes. What makes NIK so powerful is that it is extremely easy to use while employing the probably best algorithms for enhancing your images. It’s a collection of different plug-ins that work with either Adobe Lightroom or Apple Aperture. The small software company NIK has been known to produce one of the finest toolsets for getting the absolut best out of your photos. Enhancing your photographs in post-production does not require a complicated software package such as Photoshop. ![]() ![]() Heck, it’s even the same price right now with the rebate thingy. Wahoo ELEMNT: If you want a bigger screen – go forth and substitute everything I said here and just remove the word ‘Bolt’. Polar doesn’t seem to care about this unit for updates, so why should you? Which is too bad, because I think they were onto something. But again, for $170, it’s by far the best bike computer out there at that price (or anywhere near it). But it’s simply not in the same ballpark as the BOLT or Edge 520, mainly due to features. Polar M460: A very solid option, really solid, priced really well. But if you’re looking at sub-$200 options – then great – definitely a solid performer. Lezyne (various models): They’ve done good (great?) work in the past few years, but like the M460 below it’s just not in the same category here. I’m definitely looking forward to it, but again, not here today. Hammerhead Karoo: It’s not released yet, nor do I think that’ll happen imminently. And for the Edge 1000? While still technically the highest end Garmin cycling unit, I think most would agree that it’s due for a refresh (albeit there’s little competitive reason to do so). I use the Edge 820 on all my rides, but I also prefer the Edge 520 (which is also on all my rides). Further, as I discuss a bit more in the navigation section, its mapping is actually quite different than the BOLT. But it also costs another $100 above the Edge 520, at $399, making these comparisons even less valid. Garmin Edge 820: Yup, it’s basically an Edge 520 with a sometimes finicky touch screen added and proper navigation. ![]() Still, there are other units out there, so let me just list them off real quick. The simple answer is that I’m comparing what I think are the two market leader models, and based on your commentary over the last 5 or so months, so do you. Some will probably get all bent out of shape. The units I’m not including:īefore we dive too deeply, a lot of folks will ask about why I’m excluding other units. There are some 2,550 comments published to those posts that go into extreme discussions about the most minute of things. And failing all that, both full posts have nearly 2,500 comments between the two of them. Not to mention the product comparison tool as well. Of course, if you’ve got more questions about either one there’s always the full posts on both to give you total detail overload. It’s a bit of a showdown between the two units where I’m going to dive into all the details that you might want to consider (and then a bunch you probably never considered). This post is all about bike computers, and in particular the most popular two bike computers out there right now: The Garmin Edge 520 and the Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT. No other topic or subject area gets anywhere near as much debate or concentration as these two areas. There are two questions which reign supreme around these parts: Which watch to get, and which bike computer to get. ![]() ![]() ![]() The signature flash of colour, like moon shine, from within moonstone is caused by Albite inclusions in traditional moonstone, however this adularescent effect is caused by a similar mechanism but different chemical inclusions in Labradorite, and thus Rainbow Moonstone as well.
